Pamela's Bio:
I am a fiber artist, using mostly basketmaking techniques, not necessarily in a traditional manner. Weaving is an escape and exploration. There are very few boundaries as to what I consider "appropriate" weaving material, or "acceptable form".
I tend to work in series, developing ideas over the course of several years, often making changes to works in the middle of the night. Birth, rebirth, cocooning, transition, transformation, metamorphosis, emergence, change, and perspectives on these processes often are apparent in my weaving. I seem to have more ideas than time execute them.

Only 151 entries out of more than 1,000 submissions were chosen as finalists in this year’s competition. The annual awards program is sponsored by NICHE Magazine, the exclusive trade publication for progressive retailers of art and fine craft.
The NICHE Awards began in 1990 to recognize the outstanding creative achievements of American and Canadian craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores. Judging is based on three main criteria:
- Technical excellence, both in surface design and form
- Market viability
- A distinct quality of unique, original and creative thought
Winners of the 2009 NICHE Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft.
Pamela Zimmerman, a local fiber artist is gaining national attention with her diverse fiber work, not the least of which is the series “Catching the Moon.” Zimmerman credits the Beaufort County Arts Council for assistance in gaining national recognition. “It never would have happened if I had not been encouraged by BCAC,” she says, “They pointed me towards the Regional Artist Project Grant several years ago, which has helped me broaden the impact of my art exponentially!” The Regional Artist Project (RAP) Grant, which Zimmerman received last year, is a grant program that provides financial support to developing professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists. Zimmerman was provided funds to have professional images taken of her artwork. The images are used in submitting Zimmerman’s artwork to national-level fine art shows, including the NICHE Awards.
Pamela Zimmerman has lived in Washington for 19 years, together with her husband and two children. Her work can be seen in Washington at the Beaufort County Arts Council and Riverwalk Gallery. Her “Catching the Moon” series and other works can be seen online at www.pamelazimmerman.net .
