I am very manic at times…my work can be crazy but its something I am compelled to do and it helps me to express my ideas…another language recently through a number of shows I have had at ACME art studios and Phoenix I have met people who speak the same language…this is exciting to me it validates what I am doing…I have the freedom to dream and I let my imagination and my work run wild…never knowing where it will take me but it’s a lot of fun and heartache too!

BIO:
Michelle Connolly

Since 1999 I have been creating art based on ideas that I collect from everyday life. I am inspired by many things; my children, daydreams, happy accidents, the response to my artwork, and emotional expression – joy, fear, excitement. My British roots have provided me an appreciation of comedy and irony that often is reflected in my work.

I am constantly playing with visual material in the environment and the physical materials: paper, fabric, inks, paints ... in my studio. My work is spontaneous, experimental, playful and expressionistic. My creative process relies on a constant stream of ideas and I prefer working on multiple images at a time.

Making art has taken a central role in my life since moving to Wilmington from Australia where I worked in the software industry. Chiefly self-taught, I find passion and self-expression through my art.

Michelle’s studio is located at:
ACME Art Studios
711 North 5th Avenue
Wilmington, NC 28401.

Artist Statement & Bio

I was born and raised in England.   For eight years I lived in religious communities in India, England and Oregon, where I came to understand that every task is an opportunity for meditation and every task done with total awareness is a work of art.

I did not realize the value of this insight until I returned to making art.  I have learned to respect the unknown in my work, allowing the paintings a space to grow.  I paint from a place inside myself, beyond my mind.  The painting tells me when it is ready.

In my paintings I am concerned with surface.  I sculpt and burnish texture onto my canvasses so that they become both visually and tactually exciting.

I take my inspiration from the world around me; from patterns in nature and my observations on the human condition.

I now live in Chapel Hill with my husband and daughter.  I am a member of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts, the Orange County Artists Guild, the Durham Art Guild and the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh.  I have my work in Main Street Gallery in Carrboro.  I am also a docent at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill.

Featured Artist: Katrina Fairbank

Website

Bio

Katrina Fairbank is a realistic acrylic painter of both portraits and landscapes. Focusing on light contrasts, Katrina uses the brightness and versatility of acrylics and colored pencil to portray her interpretation of people, animals and landscapes. She also does commissioned portraits in acrylic, charcoal and colored pencil of people, pets and even boats.

As a native of Maryland, Katrina studied illustration and music at Montgomery College in Rockville and minored in art education at the University of Maryland. She put her art studies on hold while pursuing two degrees and a career in special education. She moved to Colorado Springs in 1994 where she studied for 3 years at the Bemis School of Art. Katrina took classes in painting and pastel in Florida while on a 3-year RV trip around the country. While living in Durango, CO., she taught an after school art program and private drum lessons in the schools. Now a resident of Southport, N.C., she continues to paint and play drums as well as teach art and music to children.

Favorite subjects of Katrina's are boats and coastal scenes, musicians in action, children and pets. Using her camera and sketchbook, she plans paintings on location, working on them later back in her home studio. Katrina's work has shown locally wherever she has lived and has won awards in Colorado and North Carolina. Her commissioned portraits are in private collections in Colorado, Maryland, Montana, North Carolina and Washington. She is a current member of the Associated Artists of Southport, Oak Island Art Guild, the Brunswick Concert Band , Brunswick Big Band and the Brunswick Little Theater. Her work can be seen at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC and Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, as well as local shops here in Southport.

Standing Watch

This little bluebird hung around my garden this summer and I loved the fact that he looked like he was watching over his domain

Penny's Bio:

Patrice Donnelly sums up Artist quite beautifully: "An artist is more than the person who puts brush to canvas, notes to page, clay to form etc. An artist is an actual state of being, one that moves both inside and outside the realms of a studio or creative work. It is a way of living, of perceiving, and most of all, of sharing."

There is no way to better state who I am or what I am. I live and work in a small rural community in the foothills of North Carolina. My art is representative of the type of lifestyle around me. I love painting landscapes and still life's. The country side here is full of history and life. It shows on the people here and in their lifestyles. I also believe it shows in my work as an artist.

I am a self-taught artist. Even at an early age I began drawing and painting and trying new techniques with art. When I look at an object that some may consider ordinary I try to find a way to bring that object to life through my paintings or drawings.
I am married to a wonderful husband that encourages my inspirations and talent. I have two new babies Nicki a miniature dachshund and Deacon a Yorkie. Their antics in my studio make for some interesting times. With paint and brushes and canvas everywhere they manage to find lots of entertainment while "mom" is painting or drawing. They have an old t-shirt of mine that they play with, it keeps them entertained for hours.

I love art whether it be abstract, traditional, or realism it is the self-expression of that artist. The artist puts a part of their soul into every painting or drawing.

Cafe Walk

I love the outdoor cafes and being able to sit and watch people as they stroll by.

Stranded on the Low Water Bridge

The low water bridge use to connect two counties: Yadkin and Surry County. This wonderful old landmark was torn down to make way for a modern bridge.

Sunrise over Pilot Mountain

The sun is just beginning to rise and those in the old house are waking to the smell of bacon frying and coffee. The occupants are getting ready for another day of work

Susan Dade in Profile

New York city in the 70 's was a perfect place for Fashion Illustrator Susan Dade.
While perfect for fashion, it lacked natural beauty... something that pulled Susan from the busy city to North Carolina a few years ago.
Now, instead of sketching models, she paints landscapes, waterfronts and other natural beauties. Her paintings are free and colorful yet detailed.
Upon graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, she was hired as a fashion illustrator for Womens’ Wear Daily the fashion industry bible consulted by designers, manufacturers and store buyers looking for the latest trends. Susan was on staff there for six years when she was hired by Glamour magazine to illustrate and design ads all connected with the major advertisers in Glamour. Her charcoal and pen and ink drawings were printed and seen nationally in The New Yorker magazine and The NY Times as well, through the early 80' s.
Her ready-to-wear lifestyle slowed Down a bit when she left to raise a family and started teaching at a number of art schools including Fashion Institute of Technology. After 15 years of teaching, moving to a warmer climate was looking better and better. The family visited Caswell Beach on vacation and fell in love with the area.  In 1994 they moved to St. James Plantation.
She doesn't miss the fashion sketches that jump started her career, but instead keeps busy painting the coast! Her work is shown at galleries up and down the coast. Susan has won numerous awards including Best in Show at the Wilmington Azalea Festival show. Her work is in many private and corporate collections nationally and worldwide, available locally at Ricky Evans Gallery and Franklin Square Gallery both in Southport, Sunset River Marketplace, Calabash.

Susan’s painting South Harbour was juried in the NC Watercolor Society 63rd Show by Juror Charles Ried at the Greenville County Museum of Art.
